Acianthus caudatus
This deciduous terrestrial orchid grows in moist areas of eucalypt forest,
often along creeks. While the flower is quite large at about 6cm tall,
this orchid is easily overlooked as the flower is so slender and the dark colour
does not stand out.
 |
The leaf is heart shaped to 30mm by 20mm, green on top and purple
underneath. The leaf grows about 20mm above the leaf litter. The
flower stem grows to about 25cm tall and bears up to about 6 flowers but
generally only 2 or three. |
There is no other orchid which can be confused with this orchid when in
flower as no other orchid has the long filamentous segments. |
